Limehouse Declaration

Limehouse Declaration
A statement issued on 25 January 1981 by a group of four senior Labour Members of Parliament, Roy Jenkins, David Owen, Bill Rodgers and Shirley Williams, who subsequently were often referred to as the ‘Gang of Four’. They formed the Council for Social Democracy, a preliminary step towards the founding of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) of which they were to become leading members. In the document – released from Dr Owen’s Limehouse home – they made clear their view that ‘the drift towards extremism in the Labour Party [was] not compatible with its democratic traditions’ and pledged themselves to work for a realignment of British party politics.
